Blogging, IM and Podcasting for Non-Techies

Entry fee: Cost of the workshop will be $25.00 for SMLC members and $30.00 for non-members. Fees cover continuing education units (CEUs), instructional materials, and refreshment breaks.

Learn the ins and outs of blogging, RSS feeds, tagging, and emerging technologies that are relevant to libraries. We will examine RSS aggregators, various blog publishing platforms, and online photo sharing tools. Participants will create their own blogs in under five minutes.

Learn how blogging can help promote your library programs and services.

In the afternoon we will discuss emerging trends in instant message reference and Podcasting in the library. Learn how easy and inexpensive it is to keep in touch with your increasingly tech savvy patrons. We will examine how several libraries have successfully implemented these programs.

The presenter will demonstrate how staff with little or no technical expertise can get into the game. All that is needed is a little enthusiasm, a bit of time, some free software, and your existing computer equipment.

Trainer:

Kevin Smith is the assistant director of the Cass District Library. He maintains the web site and ILS. He is also the author of the Fiddling Librarian 3.0 blog. In 2004 he received his MLS from the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis.
